Biodiversity highlights: Area conserved – 32ha.
Deetlefs Wine Estate has been farmed by the Deetlefs family since 1822. The estate is situated at the foot of the Du Toitskloof Mountains in the picturesque Breede River Valley, which forms an integral part of the winelands of the Western Cape. |
The conservation area of this farm consists of a section of the Smalblaar River (tributary of the Breede River). Although the riparian zones of this river have been transformed in the past (‘walls’’ been created by bulldozing the riparian areas, to control flooding of vineyard) this specific section of river still has some sections of the riparian zone in a relatively good condition, with indigenous vegetation such as Palmiet, Wild Almond trees, as well as Rhus spp. There has been good recovery of indigenous vegetation on previously bulldozed sections. A wide buffer zone has been kept between vineyard development and the river, some of this area includes some highly threatened Breede Alluvium Fynbos. Working for Water has cleared the river section of all alien vegetation. The management of Deetlefs is committed to ongoing follow up of the cleared area. Part of the conservation area consists of mountain fynbos, in a good condition (age of veld - eight years and relatively free of alien species). Some Black Wattle infestations on the lower part exist, but clearing of this area is already part of their future clearing plan.
In their drive to be the ultimate environmentally friendly wine cellar, they have installed the first fully fledged biological wastewater treatment plant (SBR) on a wine estate. Deetlefs Wines are also HACCP accredited as well as BRC accredited at the highest level.
‘Growing up on a farm gives me a sense of pride in my heritage and a deep respect for the land that has nurtured us. This in turn gives me the confidence to expand our horizons using innovative ways creating classic wines whose quality and style will reflect those deep-rooted values and traditions I treasure, but which will also point the way to a bright, bold future for the Deetlefs Group’-Kobus Deetlefs
