Biodiversity highlights: Area conserved – 182ha.
Cape Lion Vineyards is situated on the slopes of the Paardeberg in the Paarl district. The Paardeberg mountain holds some 40 ‘’Red Data Book’’ plant species, as well as many birds species, including a pair of black eagles and several other birds, as well as a large baboon population, caracal, small antelope and possibly Cape leopard.

The owner Julian Johnson and his wife Bridget are committed to farming practices that encourage and sustain the unique biodiversity of this farm. Their conservation area consists of some 131 hectares of mostly Boland Granite Fynbos. The conservation status of this veldtype is endangered. This vegetation type consists of a fairly dense, 1-2 m tall closed scrubland with occasional low, gnarled trees dotted through the landscape.

Although some alien vegetation occurs (single Pines, Hakea and Port Jackson) most of the area is still in a pristine condition  ,The Paardeberg mountain holds some 40 ‘’Red Data Book’’ plant species, , as well as many birds species, including a pair of black eagles and several other birds, , as well as a large baboon population, caracal, small antelope and possibly Cape leopard.

Bridget also coordinates most of the conservation activities that take place on Paardeberg and with her great passion for the natural environment has encouraged many land owners to become involved. At present she is driving the formation of a Fire Protection Association for the area, and is currently completing the Goldfields Course in Environmental Education. Her course assignments have led to the establishment of the Paardeberg Conservation Education Initiative, whose prime focus is to improve communication between farmers, service providers and authorities in their respective efforts to sustainably preserve the biodiversity of the Paardeberg, as well as use the mountain as an educational resource for all age groups. Specifically, this initiative has run a Fire and Biodiversity workshop for some 80 farmers, enlisted subscription of labour from various farms to the Cape Nature Field Day and also to a VWS Fire Training Certification in Cape Town, and now is to commence a series of winetastings where topical biodiversity issues are addressed. Funding for a part time secretary for this initiative is currently being sought.
