Biodiversity highlights: Area conserved – 47ha.
Evidence of conservation commitment is amongst others, the fact that valuable land worth plus minus R5 000 000-00, was set aside for conservation of the Red Data Book specie Serruria gracilis (graceful spider head), when the specie was discovered on the Estate during the reticulation construction phase of the project.

Conservation actions were undertaken right from the planning stages of the Fransche Hoek Estate. A development framework document with various other inputs and documents was then compiled by Dennis Moss PartnershipThe first professional team was appointed as follow:

Evidence of conservation commitment is amongst others, the fact that valuable land worth plus minus R5 000 000-00, was set aside for conservation of the Red Data Book specie Serruria gracilis (graceful spider head), when the specie was discovered on the Estate during the reticulation construction phase of the project.

Fransche Hoek Estate is also contractually committed to develop and manage the precinct in accordance with internationally recognized ISO14001 standards of environmental care, and has already appointed specialists to assist and audit these obligations from the start of the land rehabilitation phase.

Five corridors for storm water channeling and service water streams coming from the Franschhoek pass was constructed at a total cost of plus minus R2 700 000-00.

Landscaping to the amount of R5 000 000-00 was undertaken to reinstate endangered ***or*** other fynbos species as part of rehabilitation on open spaces and common property as well as side walks.

As far as the mentioned open spaces and residential stands are concerned a landscaping officer (qualified horticulturist) is in charge of the coordination of Cape indigenes species and fynbos planting, with a comprehensive landscaping guideline and planting list compiled by Dennis Moss Partnership Landscaping Architects.

Contractors Rules and Regulations make provision for the induction and breeving of contractors and builders before setting foot on the Estate, with regard to environmental education, and heavy fines are issued for any breach of this regulations.

A work for water program and ongoing rehabilitation program to clear the Estate and the northern part of the La Cotte Stream running into the Bergriver, from alien invasive species, such as the elata wattle, black wattle, pine, silky wattle, american bramble and bloekom, was undertaken and most of these areas have now been cleared collectively, with a positive impact on the flow of the La Cotte Stream. ,,, A permanent force team is continuously busy with the process of alien clearing.

A massive operation was also undertaken to rectify erosion, diggings and dongas of the old shooting range which was previously situated on the land. ,,, The abovementioned operations were also undertaken at a further expense of several million rands.

The old dedicated municipal household refuse dump was rehabilitated at a cost of R5 500 000-00. ,,, This dump was situated in the Patryspoort stream running through the Estate and the center of Franschhoek and was previously heavily polluted, toxic and smelly. ,,, All the old waste was removed and today is a beautiful cosmetic dam, with planted fynbos beds and a beautiful walk path leading to the Mont Rochelle ,,, nature reserve.

The most advanced telemetry, computerized dripping irrigation system in the Franschhoek Valley was installed, at a cost of R2 750 000-00 to save water and to set a example for the farming community.

The future vision for the Fransche Hoek Estate (21ha vineyards and 7ha olive ,,, trees) and conservation area (47ha), is to develop it as a charming model for the ,,, whole community and visitors to Franschhoek, with the belief that best prestigious wines and olives in the country will be produced on the Estate, so to help and uplift the previous disadvantaged in the Valley of Franschhoek. ,,,

Also to safeguard and preserve this environmental jewel and bioversity of unique fynbos and other indigenous species in natural areas, for the next generation and tourists to South Africa with the aim to farm vineyard in harmony with ,,, existing sensitive eco-systems.
