Biodiversity highlights: Area conserved – 15ha.
This property forms a natural passage from the high peaks of the Botmaskop to the Zevenrivieren River. The strength of this connection has reinforced our idea to reintroduce a pristine endemic ecological corridor. Most of the previously areas infested with alien vegetation have been cleared and a rehabilitation project is well on its way.

The Jordaan family repurchased the farm in 2006 after it had been sold 9 years previously by Michael’s father. ,, Our 3 children are the 4th generation to live on the farm, making us one of the old families of the Banhoek area.

After various subdivisions the original farm is now 27Ha in extent and an additional purchase of 12 Ha lower down the slope has now formed a natural passage from the high peaks of the Botmaskop to the Zevenrivieren River. The strength of this connection has reinforced our idea to reintroduce a pristine endemic ecological corridor.

We have 17 Ha of vineyards and an historical werf with buildings spanning 4 eras of style.

The obstacles

  • Massive 40 year old pine and blue gum planted forests of 6.8 Ha in the very steep valleys to drain water
  • Acacia forest of 1.3 Ha at the top of the farm
  • Kikuyu surrounding dam
The plan
  • To remove all invasive alien vegetation in selected areas on the farm correctly, responsibly and sustainably
  • To replant endemic fynbos in the areas selected to form an ecological corridor
  • To encourage the flowing of the original streams down the slopes
  • All water runoff from developed ground to be channelled to prevent erosion and loss of top soil
  • All roads to be hard surfaced and assist in storm water control
What has been done so far?
  • We have removed 4 Ha of massive pines (by cutting) and blue gums(cutting and herbicide)
  • Temporary irrigation to these slopes to establish plants to be removed later
  • The ,, slopes have been seeded with endemic grasses, pioneer species and Proteaceae plugs.
  • Sprayed with herbicide .5Ha of Kikuyu and planted patches of endemic Proteaceae plugs
  • Bulbs that have been dormant for 20 years are popping up
  • There are existing water channels underground along some steep hard surfaced roads this is continuing
  • Removing 2 Ha of vineyards at the top of the farm to cultivate Proteas that will act as a natural buffer to baboons
  • Ladders for baboons at the two concrete dams where previously baboons have drowned
