Biodiversity highlights: Area conserved – 850ha.
Dirk Human played a major role in the establishment of the Nuwejaars Wetland Special Management Area (SMA) and his own farm contributes some 850 hectares of mostly pristine wetlands.

Black Oystercatcher refers to a range of sought after boutique wines from the coastal Agulhas district and Elim wine ward, the newest of the maritime vineyards. The farm is situated on the southern coastal lowlands, near the historical village of Elim on the southern most tip of Africa. The strong cool summer winds ensure a very cool ripening season, resulting in the production of some world class wines.

Black Oystercatcher is named after the endangered ocean bird that thrive along this coastline.

Besides producing excellent wines, this farm also forms part of the Nuwejaars Wetland Special Management Area (SMA) An SMA is defined as an area of excellence and good practice, where the ethos of sustainable development is served in practice. It is further described as a cadastral geographical unit, formally recognized and managed as an area where environmental sustainability is promoted in practice and in accordance with international standards for environmental sustainability.

Dirk Human played a major role in the establishment of this SMA and his own farm contributes some 850 ha of mostly pristine wetlands.

Various game species that are endemic to the area will be re-introduced. The SMA has been divided into a core (pristine natural area), buffer and transition area. Where a road cuts through a core area appropriate cattle grids will be constructed as to allow wildlife to migrate freely throughout the core area. The transition area of approximately 20 332 hectares (intensive agricultural areas) will be fenced in with a similar type of fencing. This implies that the transition area will be effectively ‘’contained’’ by the core and buffer areas.
