Biodiversity highlights: Area conserved – 2223ha.
Carel Nel of Boplaas is one of South Africa’s leaders in the implementation of sustainable solutions to tackle the climate change issue and reduce environmental damage. |
In cooperation with Dr. Annelise and Jan Vlok of Cape Nature, the carbon sequestration of the natural area was determined. Their 2223 hectares of conservation area consist mostly of valley thicket and arid thicket vegetation. The spekboom (Portulacaria afra), one of the many succulents found in the Calitzdorp area, is one of the most efficient plants in sequestrating carbon. This plant dominates the valley thicket area, while it is only scattered in the arid thicket areas. Although the calculation was done for the spekboom only, it still shows that Boplaas has a negative carbon footprint.
Much of the rare flora of the Little Karoo has been lost due to the devastating effects of ostrich farming. For the past ten years Boplaas has been in the process of rehabilitating the 2223 ha of veldt they own around Calitzdorp. When the properties were purchased, the veldt was in poor condition, but today there are vast improvements in the quality of the vegetation. Succulent species are highly prized by collectors and are threatened by illegal collection and trade. Boplaas appointed a person a patrol the area on a full-time basis. |
