Biodiversity highlights: Area conserved – 2ha.
Situated in the heart of South Africa’s famous Paarl Valley, Glen Carlou enjoys a proud reputation, not only for its world class wines but also for its picturesque setting on the slopes of the Simonsberg. Among othe attraction drawing visitors (including an estimated 60 bird species) to the beautiful estate is the unique Fynbos Garden, which boasts a rich variety of endemic indigenous plant species-ranging from the Eriocephalus africanus to the Pelargonium capitatum.

Since 2003, Glen Carlou has been wholly owned by Hess Family Vineyards. Currently Hess Family craft Terroir Wines on four continents, with wineries in Australia, South Africa, Argentina and California, USA. Sustainable farming practices are an integral part of the general philosophy within the Family, in many cases culminating in organic and biodynamic practices. Glen Carlou’s recent audit yielded a result of 84%. Currently Bodega Colome in Argentina is fully biodynamic certified. At Peter Lehman Wines in Australia, more than 80% of the vineyards are farmed organically, although not necessarily certified. The latter approach is also followed here at Glen Carlou as well as our vineyards in Napa, CA. In February 2010, the famous Mr. Alan York will once again visit Glen Carlou for three days, during which we will further our investigation in moving Glen Carlou toward organic, and then possible biodynamic certification.

There is a very clear “top-down” message from management within all wineries, that we should “put back in nature, that which we take out”. At Glen Carlou this message manifests itself in our Viticulture Practices, wine making philosophy and our general approach to managing and preserving our environment. We have established Fynbos gardens, instituted clear policies in preserving our wildlife as well as preserving “natural” vegetation, including rehabilitation of existing indigenous areas. During a recent invited stay by conservationist Mr. Andrew Taylor, he managed to identify more than 59 bird species during his week-long stay, something we believe is a good indication of favourable Habitat for birds, encouraged by the established Fynbos Gardens.
