Biodiversity highlights: Area conserved – 55ha.
Boekenhoutskloof derives its name from the Boekenhout tree, of which there are still several along the stream banks of the property. A rare Erica, Erica lerouxiae (seen in photo above), has been identified on the property and is completely endemic to Boekenhoutskloof. They are currently sponsoring a PhD research project on porcupines considering they have a brand called Porcupine Ridge. |
Boekenhoutskloof derives its name from the Boekenhout tree, of which there are still several along the stream banks of the property. There has been an active conservation interest on the farm since the current owners purchased the property in 1993. Alien eradication is taking place on an ongoing basis and large parts of the mountain have already been cleared of pine & gums. Restoration of the sensitive riverine area has also been a focus as well as the re-introduction of various Protea species. A rare Erica called Erica lerouxiae, has been identified on the property and is completely endemic to Boekenhoutskloof and the neighbouring farm (Haut Espoir). There are plans to propagate material and re-establish newly cleared areas of the mountainside with this rare Erica species.
Considering Boekenhoutskloof has a wine brand called Porcupine Ridge, they are currently sponsoring a PhD student, who is researching the feeding behaviour and movements of the Crested Porcupine. This is been done on Boekenhoutskloof and on a research site near Niewoudtville over a three-year project. Boekenhoutkloof’s commitment to this project over the period is in the region of R200 000.
Boekenhoutskloof are also founder members of the Franschhoek Mountain Conservancy (together with Haut Espoir) which is an initiative to improve co-operation between neighbouring landowners aswell as improve fire management and fynbos conservation in the Franschoek Valley. Boekenhoutskloof produces four wine brands: Boekenhoutskloof, Chocolate Block, Wolftrap and Porcupine Ridge. |
