Biodiversity highlights: Area conserved – 15ha.
Almenkerk Wine Estate is situated in the Elgin Valley, surrounded by the Kogelberg Biosphere, which is classified as a World Heritage Site. 20 Hectares of the farm have been surveyed by CapeNature and found to be of high conservation value. The site also supports at least three Red Data Book listed plants and many more may be discovered.

The Van Almenkerk family has the philosophy to produce the highest quality of wines in a sustainable manner.

20 Hectares of the farm have been surveyed by CapeNature and found to be of high conservation value. This natural area has been described by Nick Helme as one of the four best available opportunities for conservation of Elgin Fynbos/Renosterveld Mosaic vegetation. The site also supports at least three Red Data Book listed plants and many more may be present.

When they purchased the farm, the natural areas were already heavily infested with alien species, but to date they have restored some 15 hectares to pristine fynbos. The process is ongoing and they aim to maintain a 50/50 balance between fynbos and vineyards.

The vineyard blocks have been spaced widely with the idea of having tongues of fynbos protruding in between the blocks. In addition to expanding the natural area, this would offer significant advantages for biological control and reducing the need for chemical sprays.

They are using natural predators and are mulching the vineyards. A nursery for indigenous plants exists and they are on a constant lookout for low-impact approaches to wine growing.
